Life After Surgery

HomeHome → Weight Loss Procedures → Mini Gastric Bypass → Life After Surgery

Mini gastric bypass is a laparoscopic procedure that has been developed as an effective weight loss surgery. The surgery is very much like a standard gastric bypass. It is however a shorter procedure and is easily reversible. The stomach is actually cut into a small pouch. This pouch allows smaller intake of food compared to the standard stomach. The surgery is typically used for people who have a body mass index (BMI) of 40 and above. The stomach pouch is connected to an area of small intestine in such a way that it allows less absorption of calories. It also allows a person to eat whatever he or she wants but in a certain limit.

If the patient has problem recovering from the surgery or is not coping well due to other health issues, the surgery can be easily reversed. There are no large incisions made for the surgery to take place, so the patient does not have to worry about surgical scars or hernia. There are no foreign bodies inserted and there is minimal dumping syndrome.

The mini gastric bypass surgery will alter the life of the person undergoing surgery significantly. The surgery is considerably new therefore long term effects are still not very clear. Like other weight loss surgeries, the surgeon will design a post surgery diet plan for the patient. This diet plan will start with a liquid diet followed by pureed food, semi solid and eventually solid food. The doctor will tell you the best time to switch from one diet plan to another.

You might suffer from initial discomfort after the surgery. Surgery can lead to nausea and vomiting. This is a result of all weight loss surgeries where the stomach is reduced in size. It will take the stomach a few months to adjust to the food intake. Try not to eat or drink quickly. Chew each bite properly until the food is completely mashed.

Body aches and the weak feeling will pass with time. The feeling will go away when the proper diet is in place. Constipation can start after the surgery. This is because of the fact that you are consuming less food than what your body is used to. Eat foods that are high in fiber and increase the intake of liquids. Dumping syndrome can be caused if you do not follow proper eating habits.

Patients usually take around two to six weeks to start feeling normal and balanced again.
