Surgical Removal of Gallstones
Gallstones are crystallized particles that develop in the gallbladder and can cause health complications without timely treatment. Depending on your condition, Dr. Daniel Huacuz can safely and quickly remove gallstones at our Tijuana, Mexico, practice using one of two methods. At Certified Bariatric Surgeons, we provide both conventional surgery as well as minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery. Although it is possible to have gallstones and not experience any adverse effects, they can often cause intense abdominal pain, bloating, and nausea, especially after eating. If you are experiencing symptoms of gallstones, Dr. Huacuz can help you experience relief.
Dr. Huacuz can perform traditional gallstone removal surgery or use advanced laparoscopic technology to remove the gallstones.
Signs and Symptoms
Most patients do not realize they have gallstones until a bile duct is blocked and pain develops. The most common symptoms of gallstones include:
- Abdominal pain
- Excessive sweating
Types of Gallstones
Those who are obese, pregnant, have diabetes, or take certain medications for birth control and cholesterol are at a higher risk of developing gallstones. There are three types of gallstones:
- Cholesterol Stones: These are the most common type and account for 80% of gallstones in the gallbladder. Generally a yellow-green color, they consist of undissolved, hardened cholesterol.
- Pigment Stones: These stones are dark brown or black in color and are made up of bilirubin. They are smaller in size and typically occur when the fluid your liver produces (bile) and your gallbladder stores contains too much bilirubin.
- Mixed Stones: These gallstones are a combination of cholesterol and pigment stones.
During your initial consultation, Dr. Huacuz will perform a detailed examination, paying careful attention to your symptoms and family and medical history, since gallstones are hereditary. If gallstones are detected, he may first prescribe medications, such as chenodiol or ursodiol, and recommend dietary and lifestyle changes to treat your gallstones.
Foods that are fried, high in cholesterol, and low in fiber can irritate your gallbladder. Maintaining a diet of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and lean meat (poultry and fish) can help reduce side effects.
If your body does not respond to medications and diet changes, medical treatment may be necessary. In these cases, Dr. Huacuz can perform traditional gallstone removal surgery or use advanced laparoscopic technology to remove the gallstones. The traditional method requires large incisions in the abdomen to remove the gallbladder and involves a more extensive recovery.
During laparoscopic cholecystectomy, Dr. Huacuz will make small incisions in your abdomen and use a thin tube with a camera and special instruments to carefully navigate and remove your gallbladder through the incisions. As the most common form of gallbladder surgery, this procedure is minimally invasive, promotes quick recovery, and is suitable for most patients.
